Achieving Greater Results Differently

Our common efforts to increase equity and inclusion, protect our planet, change systems, and improve lives almost invariably presumes we begin with a specific focus area and action-based strategy. What we share here is not a replacement for such proven philanthropic approaches. We are recommending additional approaches that under the right circumstances also have a long history of achieve tremendous results. And in some cases, catalytic outcomes took place for as low as $20,000

Serving as Honest Brokers

Maintaining an honest broker relationship with our visitors while maintaining our own evidence-based conclusions – often still open to interpretation –  and inherent biases requires considerable attentiveness on our part. However, throughout this site, we strive to:

  • Present the pros and cons of big and broad approaches, while acknowledging that they will appeal to a small subset of funders.
  • Recognize that the success of these approaches often depends on multiple factors, including favorable circumstances.
  • Highlight how measuring outcomes varies based on a funder’s criteria.

Some will conclude that achieving broad results outweighs the benefits of approaches that more directly address specific systemic barriers to change; others will not.

Achieving Big and Broad Results

One excellent example of achieving big and broad results took place in 1960 and has continued to this day. It was the Foundation Center Directory, made only possible by funders aligned with the organization’s vision. Today we cannot count the number of nonprofits who survived thrived over the last 60 years based on this directory. We believe it is fair to state that we are not just referring to statistics. We are referring to children that would have not otherwise had an opportunity create a meaningful future, the enactment policies that increased equity and inclusion, movements that protected our environment.

Many organizations with big and broad agendas have achieved success in part because of funders who supported them. A few of our honorable mentions include the Charitable Aid Foundation, Charity Navigator, TechSoup, GivingTuesday, Philanthropy Together, Epic Africa, and VolunteerMatch.
